Assembly Bypolls 2025: Congress, AAP, and Trinamool Secure Key Victories

Date:

Counting for the recent assembly by-elections, held on June 19, 2025, has concluded, revealing a mixed bag of results across five constituencies in Gujarat, Kerala, West Bengal, and Punjab.
In Punjab, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) successfully held onto the Ludhiana West assembly seat. AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora emerged victorious, defeating his closest competitor from the Congress, Bharat Bhushan Ashu, by a margin of 10,637 votes. Following the results, AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal stated in a press conference that the outcomes in both Ludhiana West and Visavadar indicate public dissatisfaction with the BJP.
West Bengal saw a landslide victory for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the Kaliganj Assembly seat. TMC candidate Alifa Ahmed secured the seat with a substantial margin of 50,049 votes over BJP’s Ashish Ghosh. The bypoll in Kaliganj was overshadowed by a tragic incident on polling day, June 23, 2025, where a nine-year-old girl was killed in a bomb explosion, prompting the Chief Minister to order police action.
In Kerala, the Congress-led UDF delivered a significant blow to the ruling LDF by wresting the Nilambur Assembly constituency. The UDF candidate won by a margin of 11,077 votes, a crucial win for the opposition ahead of next year’s state elections.
Gujarat witnessed a split result. The AAP made inroads with leader Gopal Italia winning the Visavadar seat. However, the BJP managed to retain the Kadi seat, with Rajendra Chavda securing the victory.
