Delhi Pollution Protest Turns Violent at India Gate, 22 Arrested

Date:

A demonstration against Delhi’s worsening air quality escalated into chaos at India Gate on Sunday evening, resulting in over 22 arrests. Protesters gathered to demand long-term solutions to the capital’s persistent pollution crisis, criticizing what they described as superficial government measures.
Tensions rose when police attempted to clear the blocked road to allow ambulance movement. During the confrontation, several demonstrators allegedly used chilli spray on officers, causing eye and facial injuries to four personnel who were later taken to RML Hospital. Police described the incident as unprecedented in pollution-related protests.
Authorities said the protesters broke barricades and occupied the main carriageway, leading to significant traffic disruption around India Gate. Students and members of various clean-air groups participated, accusing the government of ignoring the root causes of pollution. Some individuals also raised controversial slogans linked to a slain Maoist commander, prompting police to review video footage for further action.
The protest took place as Delhi recorded dangerously high air pollution levels, with the citywide AQI touching 396 and several areas crossing into the ‘Severe’ category. An FIR has been filed for blocking roads, assaulting police personnel, and violating protest guidelines.
