WhatsApp Enhances Privacy, Boosts User Engagement with Username Feature

Date:

In a significant transformation to its communication model, WhatsApp is introducing a new privacy feature that will enable users to connect via usernames instead of phone numbers. This development marks a substantial change in how interactions occur on the platform.

The rollout of this feature is happening in stages, allowing users to reserve unique usernames before its complete global launch anticipated later this year. Once fully implemented, initiating chats will be possible through these usernames, eliminating the need to disclose one’s mobile number.

Creating a unique handle within the app will be possible for users, and messaging will only require knowledge of that specific username, keeping phone numbers confidential. If a user’s preferred username is already in use, WhatsApp will provide alternative suggestions through an integrated generator. Importantly, there will be no public directory available for searching usernames, ensuring that only individuals who know the exact username can make contact.

Users interested in reserving a username can do so by updating the app and navigating to the following: Settings → Account → Username. WhatsApp will inform users when this feature becomes accessible in their area. Due to the app’s extensive user base, securing popular usernames early is advised as reservations commence.

To enhance privacy further, an optional “username key” will be available, providing an additional security layer. This key can be shared separately to manage who can initiate conversations. The feature caters not only to personal users but also to creators, businesses, and public accounts, allowing them to synchronize their WhatsApp identity with existing handles on platforms like Instagram and Facebook. While usernames offer a new way to connect, they remain optional, with the traditional phone number method still available for those who prefer it. Users will receive in-app notifications as the feature becomes accessible in different regions.
