Amidst the ongoing conflict in West Asia, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accused opposition parties of spreading misinformation about potential shortages of fertiliser and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Addressing a gathering in Banaskantha, Gujarat, on October 30, Modi claimed that these rumours were designed to incite panic and tarnish the government’s reputation.
Modi reassured attendees that his administration is committed to maintaining the availability of fertilisers despite international tensions and rising costs. He highlighted the government’s efforts to shield Indian farmers from the impact of increased global fertiliser prices through subsidies. For instance, while a bag of urea costs approximately ₹3,000 in the international market, Indian farmers receive it for less than ₹300. Similarly, DAP fertiliser priced at around ₹5,000 internationally is available domestically at ₹1,350 per bag.
The Prime Minister accused opposition leaders of unnecessarily alarming farmers by suggesting that fertiliser supplies could dwindle, and warned that similar tactics were being used to frighten households about potential LPG shortages. Modi emphasized the government’s commitment to absorbing financial burdens to protect agricultural productivity and support the rural economy.
Further demonstrating his government’s support for the agricultural sector, Modi released the 24th instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme during the event. This initiative provides eligible farmers with ₹6,000 annually as direct income support. He also outlined various government policies that have benefitted farmers with more than ₹50 lakh crore over the years through minimum support prices, crop insurance, and other agricultural advancements.
In addition to addressing agricultural issues, Modi inaugurated the Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre in Gujarat, dedicated to the indigenous Kankrej cattle breed. The 127-acre facility aims to enhance research and development in the livestock sector, promoting increased income opportunities through dairy farming and biogas production.
Reflecting on his public service journey, Modi recalled his first oath as Gujarat Chief Minister in October 2001, marking 25 years of public life. He expressed gratitude to the people of Gujarat for their support, which paved the way for his leadership on the national stage. Modi is also scheduled to participate in events marking Rashtriya Ekta Diwas on October 31, celebrating the 151st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
