Justice Access Promised by CJI Surya Kant Amid Economic Impact Protests

Date:

In a recent address, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant reassured citizens, with a particular focus on the youth, of the Supreme Court’s dedication to safeguarding their rights and upholding justice through the proper legal channels. His statement comes amidst a wave of student protests and accusations of police misconduct, where he highlighted the court’s readiness to examine all lawfully submitted petitions.

The Chief Justice stressed that the Supreme Court’s doors remain open to all citizens, asserting that justice will be pursued wherever it is justified. He addressed concerns that the court had previously declined to engage with the matter, clarifying that the absence of a formal petition initially prevented judicial proceedings. At that time, only a representation had been submitted, which did not satisfy the legal criteria needed for the court to take action.

Following the submission of new petitions that claim police excesses during the protests on July 20, the Supreme Court has agreed to schedule these cases for hearing on the upcoming Monday. This move underscores the court’s commitment to addressing issues brought forth in accordance with procedural requirements.

Furthermore, CJI Surya Kant issued a caution regarding the spread of inaccurate information, particularly reports implying that the Supreme Court had refused to hear the case. He underscored the importance of precise and accurate reporting to avoid misunderstandings about the court’s stance and actions.
