In a groundbreaking move, the government of West Bengal has decided to allocate ₹5 lakh each to 60 Rath Yatra committees throughout the state. This financial aid is intended to assist in the restoration and upkeep of the historic wooden chariots that play a central role in these traditional celebrations. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari highlighted the necessity of this funding by pointing out that many of these chariots, which have been part of the cultural landscape for centuries, are in urgent need of renovation and preservation.
Adhikari has emphasized that the committees should utilize these funds specifically for the repair and maintenance of the chariots, ensuring that these cultural artifacts are preserved for future generations. In an additional gesture to enhance the festivities, the government plans to organize helicopters to shower flower petals over the devotees who participate in the 30-kilometer Shravan Yatra held at Tarakeshwar in the Hooghly district.
Furthermore, the state administration has committed to establishing Seva Kendras at 75 different fair locations. These centers are intended to provide essential services to pilgrims, including medical aid, police assistance, and access to drinking water. These measures are part of a broader effort to ensure the safety and comfort of those participating in these significant religious events.
Looking ahead, the West Bengal government has expressed its intention to extend financial support to even more Rath Yatra committees in the coming years. As part of its long-term vision, the state has announced a substantial investment of ₹1,000 crore over the next three years. This fund is earmarked for the development of the Bengal Shaktipeeth Circuit, a project aimed at promoting pilgrimage and religious tourism by restoring historic temples and enhancing the overall spiritual experience for visitors to the region.
