Delhi is set to enhance its transportation offerings with the upcoming launch of the “Namo Yamuna” ferry service, as announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. This new service will commence just before the Chhath Puja festivities, which are scheduled from November 13 to 16. The ferry aims to provide both a convenient travel option and a scenic experience along the Yamuna River.
During a recent visit to Sonia Vihar Sports Club and Sur Ghat, where Chhath Puja celebrations will be centered, CM Gupta assessed the ferry’s readiness. Sur Ghat is being developed into a family-friendly area, offering a picturesque spot for riverside enjoyment and religious observance. The ferry route will stretch approximately five kilometers from Sonia Vihar to Jagatpur, offering passengers views of the ghats and the natural landscapes along the riverbanks.
The journey will last about an hour, with ticket prices set at approximately ₹500 per person. This initiative was initially slated to begin on February 20 but faced delays due to incomplete project work. Now, with preparations back on track, the service promises a blend of leisure and utility for residents and visitors alike.
The ferry, named Island Boats 40 (IB 40), was constructed by Mumbai-based Inspiration Marine Pvt Ltd. It features a catamaran-style hull, designed for stability, and is well-suited for navigating the shallow stretches of the Yamuna. The service’s infrastructure includes jetties equipped with boarding facilities, ticket counters, and waiting areas to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience for passengers.
