India and Poland to Enhance Cooperation in Defence and Technology Sectors

Date:

India and Poland are set to enhance their collaborative efforts in defense, space, nuclear energy, and advanced technologies. This decision emerged from discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, during which they also explored ways to expand economic ties with an ambition to double bilateral trade by 2030.

The leaders emphasized opportunities for joint development and production in strategic sectors, highlighting defense equipment, space technology, and nuclear energy as key areas of focus. Additionally, they discussed potential cooperation in critical minerals, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and fintech. Modi extended an invitation to Polish companies to partner with India in co-development and co-production initiatives, while Tusk underscored the importance of diversifying access to critical minerals to bolster economic security.

With the current bilateral trade standing at approximately $6.3 billion, both nations aim to increase this figure significantly by 2030. A delegation of nearly 100 Polish companies is currently exploring business opportunities across various sectors, including defense, agriculture technology, pharmaceuticals, food processing, mining, infrastructure, and technology.

Plans are underway to establish a bilateral startup bridge and foster partnerships in critical minerals and coal gasification. Indian officials anticipate that the proposed India-European Union trade agreement will open up additional avenues for exports and investment. Defense cooperation remains a pivotal area, as India and Poland work towards an agreement on the protection and exchange of classified information to support closer defense-industrial collaboration.

The two countries are also exploring possibilities for joint manufacturing of military equipment, drones, and satellite technologies, which is expected to benefit from the broader strategic partnership between India and the European Union. Discussions also touched on regional and international issues, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with Modi reiterating India’s support for diplomatic efforts to achieve peace.

The meeting underscored the enduring people-to-people connections between India and Poland, including Poland’s assistance to Indian students evacuated from Ukraine in 2022 and the historical support that India provided to Polish refugees during the Second World War. This dialogue marks a significant step in strengthening India-Poland relations, as both governments seek to expand trade, enhance strategic cooperation, and build resilient supply chains.
