Ireland Targets EU-India Trade Deal, Highlights Economic Strategic Importance.

Date:

India is increasingly being recognized as a pivotal strategic partner by the European Union, with both entities intensifying cooperation in various sectors such as trade, technology, security, and connectivity. This strengthened relationship is moving towards a significant milestone with the anticipated signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of this year. This development was underscored by Irish Ambassador Kevin Kelly during the inauguration of Ireland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Ambassador Kelly emphasized that the EU’s engagement with India transcends mere trade deals. It extends into critical areas including technology, research, climate action, maritime security, and the establishment of resilient supply chains. He noted that India and the EU are bolstering their ties not just for mutual economic benefit but also to confront global challenges collaboratively, ensuring sustained economic growth in the long term.

The impending India-EU Free Trade Agreement, with negotiations already concluded, is poised for formal signing by December. This agreement could be operational as early as next year. Beyond trade, both parties have been enhancing cooperation in essential sectors like defense, security, and emerging technologies. This comes in response to the evolving global economic and geopolitical landscape, necessitating closer alignment.

EU Ambassador Herve Delphin highlighted the strategic adjustments both Europe and India are making in response to the shifting global environment. He pointed out the pursuit of greater strategic autonomy while maintaining robust partnerships as a key focus. Delphin also underscored the critical importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and ensuring secure global trade routes, advocating for enhanced cooperation between India and the EU in maritime security and regional stability.
