India and Denmark Enhance Green Energy and Trade Partnership

Date:

India and Denmark are enhancing their strategic partnership with a focus on renewable energy, sustainable shipping, technological innovation, and trade. This strengthening of ties follows discussions held during Denmark’s Business Minister Martin Lidegaard’s visit to Mumbai and New Delhi from November 2 to 3, where he engaged with Indian government officials and business leaders to explore new economic cooperation avenues.

During his visit, Lidegaard emphasized India’s growing significance as a strategic and commercial partner, expressing Denmark’s intent to support India’s green transition. Both nations are preparing for the next phase of their Green Strategic Partnership, which was established in 2020. A joint action plan is currently being developed to enhance cooperation in areas of mutual economic and environmental interest.

In Mumbai, Lidegaard visited APM Terminals, part of the Danish shipping conglomerate Maersk, and discussed potential investment and business opportunities with Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma. In New Delhi, talks with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal centered on expanding bilateral trade, improving business opportunities, and strengthening economic relations, particularly in the context of the proposed India-European Union free trade agreement.

The discussions also highlighted sustainable maritime development, with talks led by Union Ports and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal focusing on environmentally friendly shipping, modern port infrastructure, and the development of green maritime corridors. Cooperation in renewable energy was another priority, with Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi exploring ways to enhance energy efficiency and support India’s transition to a more sustainable power system.

Denmark, a key international partner in solar energy development, contributes to the International Solar Alliance, fostering wider cooperation in renewable energy. The partnership between India and Denmark is poised to create new opportunities for investment, technological exchange, and sustainable development while deepening economic ties between the two countries.

Currently, over 200 Danish companies operate in India, employing more than 100,000 people across various sectors. The strengthened partnership is expected to further boost these figures, fostering economic growth and environmental sustainability through shared initiatives and strategic collaboration.
