India-New Zealand Trade Deal Starts October 20; EU, Canada, Chile Discussions Speed Up

Date:

As global trade dynamics continue to evolve, India is actively expanding its economic partnerships to bolster its international trade presence. In this context, India has finalized a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with New Zealand, set to be implemented on October 20. This agreement promises to grant duty-free access to all Indian exports to New Zealand, effectively from the date of enforcement, as announced by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.

The FTA, originally signed in April, aims to strengthen economic ties between the two countries by facilitating significant investment opportunities. A notable feature of the agreement is New Zealand’s commitment to channel $20 billion in investments into India over the next 15 years. However, to safeguard its domestic market, India has strategically excluded certain sensitive agricultural products such as onions, chickpeas, peas, corn, almonds, and sugar from this agreement.

Beyond the agreement with New Zealand, India is actively pursuing trade negotiations with several other international partners. Talks with the European Union, Canada, and Chile are advancing at a brisk pace. In particular, the India-Canada negotiations are poised to enter their fifth round in October, with both sides eager to make headway towards a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.

Meanwhile, discussions with Chile are on a positive trajectory, and India anticipates significant developments in its trade agreement with the European Union before the year concludes. These efforts reflect India’s broader strategy to strengthen its economic footprint globally by securing advantageous trade terms.
