Union Home Minister Amit Shah has thrown down the gauntlet to Opposition leaders, inviting them to engage in a parliamentary debate over allegations of vote theft. His remarks, made during a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state working committee meeting in Lucknow, came as a rebuttal to accusations from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, who have criticized the Election Commission’s actions.
Shah accused the Opposition of spreading baseless allegations and choosing street protests over formal discussions in Parliament. He specifically challenged Rahul Gandhi to present his claims in the parliamentary forum, asserting that Congress and the Samajwadi Party have a habit of blaming the Election Commission for their electoral setbacks instead of accepting defeat.
The Home Minister’s comments precede a series of planned Opposition demonstrations targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. These include a symbolic public impeachment event and a major protest at Delhi’s Ramlila Ground, highlighting what the Opposition perceives as threats to democratic processes.
The INDIA bloc, a coalition of Opposition parties, had scheduled the symbolic impeachment at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence. However, the event was postponed due to unseasonal rainfall. The Opposition has voiced concerns over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, alleging that the exercise could disproportionately affect certain voters to the BJP’s advantage.
Shah defended the BJP’s electoral track record, dismissing the vote theft allegations as mere excuses by the Opposition for their electoral losses. He emphasized the BJP’s readiness to address the issue in Parliament, suggesting that the Opposition’s reluctance to debate there indicates a lack of substantial evidence for their claims.
