Drug-Free Borders Initiative Aims to Boost Economic Growth by 2029

Date:

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday unveiled a strategic plan known as Nasha Mukt Bharat 2029, designed to prevent the inflow and outflow of narcotics across India’s borders. This initiative, launched from New Delhi, targets three main areas: curbing the drug supply, reducing demand, and minimizing the harm caused by drug use. Since 2019, the Indian government has been actively coordinating a national campaign aimed at dismantling drug networks.

Central to this strategy are several key measures. These include the implementation of the four-tier NCORD mechanism, the establishment of Anti-Narcotics Task Forces across all states and Union Territories, and the introduction of a national rehabilitation helpline. Additionally, the government has developed the NIDAN database to track narcotics offenders, along with using data-driven techniques to map drug networks and identify hotspots of illegal activity.

During his announcement, Shah revealed that enforcement agencies have seized over 29,968 kg of synthetic drugs, valued at more than ₹19,600 crore, between 2020 and July 2026. Furthermore, from 2019 to July 2026, the total volume of confiscated narcotic and psychotropic substances surpassed 93.34 lakh kg. These efforts underscore the government’s commitment to intensifying its crackdown on the drug trade.

Financial aspects are also being tackled head-on, with authorities seizing property worth ₹1,841 crore in 3,016 cases between 2024 and June 2026. This action is part of a broader effort to dismantle not just drug operations, but also the financial networks that support them. By targeting the economic underpinnings of the drug trade, the government aims to deliver a significant blow to narcotics operations.

Though Shah was in Goa for an official visit, he opted to cut his trip short to return to Delhi after evaluating the state’s security measures. This decision underscores the high priority the government places on national security and its ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking effectively. The launch of the Nasha Mukt Bharat 2029 roadmap represents a significant step in India’s drive to establish a drug-free nation by the end of the decade.
