India’s ambition to fortify its economic ties with Finland took a step forward as Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal engaged in talks with Finland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Riikka Purra, along with Minister of Economic Affairs, Sakari Puisto. The meetings aimed to enhance trade and investment relations, focusing on areas crucial for both nations’ economic futures.

During these discussions, both parties concentrated on expanding their collaboration in significant sectors such as digitalisation, innovation, and research and development. The dialogue also covered boosting startups and business partnerships, recognizing these areas as pivotal for mutual growth. Moreover, the conversation delved into how they could jointly explore and deepen cooperation in advanced fields like artificial intelligence, 6G, quantum technologies, semiconductors, space exploration, and sustainability.

A central topic in these meetings was the anticipated India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Both India and Finland expressed interest in how this agreement could potentially elevate bilateral trade, attract foreign investments, and open up new avenues for businesses in both countries. The discussions underscored the strategic importance of such a pact in enhancing economic interactions.

These meetings are part of a broader context where India and the European Union are actively negotiating a comprehensive trade agreement. The objective of these negotiations is to strengthen economic relationships and foster cooperation across various strategic sectors, thereby creating a framework that supports sustained economic growth for both the Indian and European economies.
