In a significant move to bolster bilateral ties, India and Switzerland have signed five agreements focusing on enhancing cooperation in trade, mobility, and technology. This development came after discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin on Monday, where they explored expanding partnerships in areas such as defence, nuclear energy, and investment.
The agreements encompass a range of sectors, including migration and mobility, young professionals, transportation, research, innovation, and technology transfer. A key aspect of the agreements is the emphasis on improving market access for Indian exports, particularly in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering goods, while encouraging Swiss investments in biotechnology, life sciences, banking, insurance, food processing, and sustainability.
As part of the migration and mobility partnership, both nations aim to address irregular migration and human trafficking, with provisions for multiple-entry visas valid for up to five years and renewable permits for students. Another agreement facilitates the exchange of young professionals, allowing up to 300 individuals from each country to engage in temporary employment, gaining valuable professional and language experience annually.
In the domain of defence and nuclear energy, India and Switzerland have agreed to explore enhanced cooperation, including military exchanges and defence production. They also plan to initiate joint research projects in fields such as health, clean energy, and space, promoting collaboration in transportation technologies, sustainable infrastructure, electric vehicles, tunnels, and other mobility systems.
These agreements are expected to strengthen the partnership between research institutions, businesses, and technology companies in both countries. Additionally, during their discussions, the leaders addressed global and regional issues, highlighting the importance of dialogue and diplomatic efforts to promote peace and stability, particularly in light of the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia.
The signing of the agreements coincides with the first anniversary of the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, a pact aimed at bolstering investment, trade, and employment between India and the four EFTA countries, including Switzerland. This renewed commitment underscores the strategic importance of India-Switzerland relations and their shared vision for future cooperation.
