Malaysia Proposes Sending DNA Experts to Nepal, Boosting Forensic Service Sector

Date:

In response to severe floods and landslides in Nepal, Malaysia is preparing to send a team of DNA specialists to aid in the identification of victims. Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan announced that the country is currently seeking authorization from Nepal to proceed with the deployment. The DNA identification process is set to begin once search and rescue operations have concluded, aiming to match DNA samples from recovered bodies with those provided by the families of missing Malaysian nationals.

Malaysia has proactively gathered DNA samples from the relatives of 55 Malaysians who remain missing following the natural disasters. With some bodies being buried swiftly due to limited resources and facilities, DNA testing has become crucial for confirming identities. This effort underscores Malaysia’s commitment to bringing closure to the families of those affected.

The deployment team, comprising 11 experts, is equipped with 12.4 tonnes of rescue apparatus. This includes advanced detection tools, communication devices, high-capacity drones, and specialized equipment designed for tunnel rescues. Additionally, the team is supported by a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to enhance mobility and operational efficiency on the ground.

By combining search, rescue, and DNA identification measures, Malaysia aims to locate the missing individuals and provide definitive answers to concerned families. The collaborative endeavor highlights the significance of international cooperation in disaster response and the importance of employing advanced technologies to address such crises.
