Iran has emphasized the enduring and historic nature of its relationship with India following a meeting between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit and served as a platform for both leaders to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional issues.

Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, underscored the significance Tehran places on its ties with New Delhi, particularly in the realms of trade and economic collaboration. Among the key topics of discussion was the Chabahar Port, a critical joint venture that continues to be a focal point of India-Iran cooperation. The two leaders also delved into various regional developments and shared their perspectives on initiatives to foster lasting peace.

India reaffirmed its dedication to enhancing its multifaceted relationship with Iran, indicating a commitment to strengthening collaboration across diverse sectors. During their dialogue, Modi and Pezeshkian also addressed ongoing regional dynamics and the diplomatic efforts necessary to secure peace. The discussions highlighted the strategic importance both nations place on their alliance in navigating regional challenges.

The meeting between the two leaders has not gone unnoticed by the United States. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented on the situation, acknowledging that countries have the sovereign right to shape their own foreign policies. However, he cautioned that nations should refrain from aiding Iran in circumventing U.S. sanctions, a statement reflecting the broader geopolitical implications of the India-Iran relationship.
