Suvendu Adhikari, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, announced a reduction in the number of vehicles in his official convoy as a measure to conserve fuel. This decision was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal to the nation, urging citizens to adopt austerity measures amidst rising global oil prices due to the West Asia conflict. Adhikari shared this directive with the Directorate of Security, emphasizing that the number of vehicles should be kept to a necessary minimum.
After being sworn in as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Kolkata’s Bhabanipur, Adhikari addressed the media, highlighting the Prime Minister’s influence in guiding public behavior through exemplary actions. He noted that while following Modi’s example is not compulsory, it is a choice for those who believe in the need for such measures. Adhikari’s initiative to limit his convoy reflects a broader effort within the state government to align with the Prime Minister’s call for economic prudence.
Prime Minister Modi’s message, delivered on Sunday, was a response to the economic challenges posed by the international crude oil price surge. He urged the public to engage in various cost-saving practices, including carpooling, utilizing public transport, working remotely, reducing gold purchases, and curbing international travel. This national call to action aims to bolster India’s economic resilience during these uncertain times.
In support of this initiative, officials from the state government have indicated that all Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs and ministers will now adopt similar measures by reducing the number of vehicles they use. This collective effort underscores the party’s commitment to promoting fiscal responsibility and environmental consciousness at both individual and governmental levels.
Typically, the Chief Minister’s convoy comprises eight to ten vehicles when navigating through the city. However, reflecting the new directive, Adhikari arrived at the legislative assembly with a reduced convoy of five vehicles. This adjustment not only aligns with the broader policy changes advocated by the Prime Minister but also sets a precedent for other leaders and citizens to follow suit in practicing efficient resource management.
