Keir Starmer, the outgoing British Prime Minister, has secured a significant diplomatic achievement by finalizing the long-discussed India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) just before announcing his resignation. This milestone was reached during a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the fringes of the 2026 G7 Summit, where both leaders set July 15 as the implementation date for the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The agreement is poised to enhance the already robust trade relationship between the two nations, which currently stands at approximately £48 billion annually.
Throughout his tenure, Starmer prioritized strengthening ties with India, making the trade agreement a central goal of his administration. He emphasized the potential for economic growth presented by the deal, pointing out India’s growing global economic stature and the advantages of streamlined trade between the countries. Under Starmer’s leadership, the Labour Party committed to deepening collaboration with India across various sectors, including trade, security, education, technology, and climate change initiatives.
Starmer’s journey to political prominence began after a distinguished legal career, during which he served as Director of Public Prosecutions. He assumed the role of Prime Minister after Labour’s overwhelming electoral victory in 2024. Despite early accomplishments in stabilizing the economy and pushing forward domestic reforms, Starmer’s position was eventually undermined by a series of policy missteps and political challenges.
In his resignation speech, Starmer expressed his understanding and acceptance of the decision made by his parliamentary colleagues, who felt he was no longer the right leader to guide Labour into the next general election. He addressed his party members with respect and gratitude, marking the end of a notable period in British politics. Starmer’s efforts to reconnect with the British Indian community and foster a stronger partnership with India remain a highlight of his leadership.
