Top Gun 3 Plot Already Locked, Says Director Christopher McQuarrie

Date:

Director Christopher McQuarrie has revealed that the third installment of the Top Gun franchise is all but ready to take off. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, McQuarrie shared that the story for the highly anticipated sequel to Top Gun: Maverick is “already in the bag.”
McQuarrie explained that the concept came together surprisingly fast. After a single conversation with co-writer Ehren Kruger, they had the framework set. He emphasized that ideation isn’t the hard part—developing the emotional weight of the story is where the real challenge begins.
While he hasn’t decided whether he’ll direct the sequel himself, McQuarrie has been researching how to emulate the late Tony Scott’s iconic visual style. Fans can also look forward to a potential spinoff featuring Tom Cruise’s outrageous character Les Grossman from Tropic Thunder.
