Our kidneys are designed to manage a specific range of fluid intake. For most healthy adults, this is around two to three liters per day from all sources. This allows them to maintain a stable internal environment without being stressed.
When you consistently drink more than this, you can fall into the overhydration trap. This puts your kidneys under pressure and can dilute the concentration of sodium in your blood.
This dilution can cause hyponatremia, a condition with symptoms that can include nausea, confusion, and seizures. It’s a clear sign that the body has been pushed out of its healthy balance.
To avoid this trap, it’s essential to listen to your body’s own wisdom. Your thirst mechanism is a reliable guide. By drinking when you’re thirsty and stopping when you’re satisfied, you can stay safely and effectively hydrated.
