External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has been invited to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Canada’s Niagara region on November 11 and 12. The gathering will include representatives from other outreach countries such as Australia, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, and Ukraine.
The invitation comes as India and Canada move to strengthen diplomatic relations following a period of tension. Relations began to improve after Mark Carney became Canada’s Prime Minister in March and held discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G7 Leaders’ Summit in June.
As host, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand is expected to hold bilateral talks with the participating ministers. India and Canada recently agreed to resume trade and investment discussions, unveiling a joint roadmap to rebuild ties during Anand’s visit to India earlier this month.
Both sides are now working to expand cooperation in areas such as technology, trade, and global governance, signaling a new phase of engagement after the strained period that followed diplomatic disputes in 2023.
