A brilliant 169 from South African captain Laura Wolvaardt ended England’s World Cup run in brutal fashion, setting up a 125-run semi-final victory and sending the Proteas to their first-ever 50-over final. Wolvaardt’s innings was a game-changer.
After reaching her maiden World Cup hundred off 115 balls, she unleashed a stunning display of power. With her team at 202 for six, she took charge, smashing 69 runs from her final 28 deliveries.
Her assault, which included four sixes, lifted South Africa to 319 for seven. England, despite four wickets from Sophie Ecclestone, were left with an impossible chase.
The chase was dismantled by Marizanne Kapp. She started with a double-wicket maiden, bowling Amy Jones and Heather Knight, as England collapsed to one for three.
Kapp finished with five for 20, also becoming the tournament’s all-time leading wicket-taker. England were bowled out for 194, their campaign brought to a decisive end by Wolvaardt’s masterclass.
