AI Threats May Lead to Worldwide Economic Slump, Warns BoE Chief

Date:

The global financial system could face significant challenges due to the rise of advanced artificial intelligence, according to Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey. In a recent communication to finance ministers and central bank governors of the G20, Bailey cautioned that sophisticated AI models are evolving to become more autonomous, enhancing their ability to solve complex problems. He expressed concerns that these advancements might facilitate cyberattacks, potentially leading to widespread disruptions across interconnected financial markets.

Bailey, who also serves as the chair of the Financial Stability Board, highlighted the lack of adequate protocols in many countries for handling the development and deployment of advanced AI systems. He emphasized the importance of international collaboration to ensure these technologies are introduced and utilized safely. Cyber risk was identified as an immediate threat, with Bailey noting that AI could accelerate the speed and magnitude of cyber threats, increasing their financial impact.

In his message, Bailey pointed out the heavy reliance on concentrated technology and third-party service providers, which could exacerbate the potential for system-wide disruptions. He also noted that high asset valuations and rising leverage within bond and equity markets might intensify the effects of a significant financial shock. The strong investor enthusiasm surrounding AI could make markets particularly susceptible to a sharp correction if expectations were to shift suddenly.

To address these concerns, Bailey called for financial authorities around the world to take coordinated measures to manage AI-related risks. He urged them to reinforce the resilience of the global financial system against these emerging threats. The warning comes at a time when the integration of AI technologies is accelerating, raising questions about how to balance innovation with security.
