Meta is rolling out a virtual velvet rope for its UK users, creating an exclusive, VIP experience for those willing to pay for a subscription. By paying a monthly fee, users of Facebook and Instagram can step into an ad-free zone, leaving the general admission, ad-supported experience behind.
Access to this VIP section costs £3.99 per month for mobile users and £2.99 per month for web users. The subscription fee grants access to a cleaner, more premium social media environment across linked accounts, free from the commercial interruptions faced by the general user base.
This velvet rope policy has been given the nod by the UK’s regulatory bouncer, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). The ICO has agreed that creating a paid, exclusive area is a legitimate way for Meta to offer a choice regarding ad targeting, thereby complying with UK law.
This model, however, has been shut down in the European Union. EU regulators have ruled that basic privacy and an ad-free option shouldn’t be an exclusive, behind-the-rope experience. They fined Meta €200m, arguing against the creation of a two-tier system for digital rights.
In the UK, the velvet rope is officially up. Meta is betting that enough users will want the VIP treatment to make it a profitable venture, all while solving a pressing regulatory issue. It marks a shift towards a more stratified social media experience.
