Date:

India and Brazil have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen bilateral ties, with a shared vision for countering terrorism, expanding defence cooperation, and boosting trade. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva met in Brasilia, following the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, and emphasized common ground on global and regional challenges.
PM Modi hailed the growing defence collaboration between the two nations as a “symbol of deep mutual trust,” stating that India and Brazil share a “zero tolerance and zero double standards” approach toward terrorism. He underscored that both countries are clear in opposing terrorism and those who support it.
President Lula announced plans to triple bilateral trade from $12 billion in the short term and reiterated Brazil’s interest in expanding a preferential trade agreement with the Mercosur bloc. He also welcomed greater presence of Brazilian aircraft maker Embraer in India, and acknowledged India’s progress in digital infrastructure, including the adoption of UPI.
The leaders witnessed the signing of six agreements, covering anti-terror efforts, renewable energy, digital innovation, intellectual property, agricultural research, and protection of classified information. Modi emphasized mutual efforts in areas like AI, supercomputers, food processing, traditional medicine, and green energy. The goal is to elevate bilateral trade to $20 billion over the next five years.
PM Modi was conferred with Brazil’s highest civilian honour, the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross, recognizing his contributions to strengthening India-Brazil relations and cooperation on global platforms.
