India Commits to Safeguarding Economic Interests Amid US Sanctions on Russia

Date:

The global energy market faces a potential shift as the U.S. House of Representatives advances a sanctions bill that could impose hefty tariffs on major purchasers of Russian oil. The legislation, known as the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, passed with a vote of 262-159 and targets countries maintaining significant trade with Russia, including India, China, Slovakia, Hungary, and Azerbaijan.

In response to this development, India has expressed its intent to safeguard its trade and economic interests. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized the country’s commitment to securing energy supplies for its population of 1.4 billion. India plans to continue leveraging a diverse range of energy sources, adapting to shifting market dynamics as necessary.

The Indian government has reportedly engaged in discussions with U.S. officials at senior levels to address potential repercussions arising from the proposed sanctions. Furthermore, India aims to collaborate with domestic trade and industry bodies to mitigate any adverse economic impacts.

India has been diversifying its energy imports, increasing purchases from countries like the United States and Venezuela, even as Russia remains a key supplier of crude oil. This strategic diversification highlights India’s proactive stance in maintaining energy security amid international pressures.

The sanctions bill has already passed the U.S. Senate and awaits presidential approval before becoming law. The prospect of these tariff measures has sparked concerns regarding their implications for India-U.S. trade relations and the broader global energy market.
