India is advancing its plans to procure an additional five S-400 Triumf air defense systems from Russia, as Moscow has now submitted a cost proposal to initiate negotiations with New Delhi. The acquisition process will move forward once the Cabinet Committee on Security makes a final decision after negotiating the price and obtaining clearance from the Finance Ministry. India’s original contract for a set of five S-400 systems, signed in 2018 for $5.43 billion, is on track to be fulfilled with the delivery of the last system anticipated in November 2026.
The new S-400 systems are projected to significantly bolster India’s air defense capabilities, particularly in the eastern sector that borders China. The S-400’s effectiveness was notably demonstrated during India’s Operation Sindoor in May 2025, where its performance underscored the strategic advantage of expanding the country’s S-400 inventory.
In a parallel development, the Indian Air Force has expressed interest in Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft. However, a decision to proceed with this particular purchase remains pending. The interest in the Su-57 comes amid China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet, adding another layer of complexity to India’s defense planning.
The potential acquisition of additional S-400 systems is also expected to be a key topic of discussion in broader India-Russia defense talks. These discussions are likely to gain further traction with the upcoming visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India for the BRICS summit scheduled for September.
