In a harrowing incident aboard a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar found himself in a life-or-death struggle after being attacked by his co-pilot. The mid-air altercation forced Machchhar to act swiftly to safeguard the 182 passengers onboard. Despite suffering multiple injuries, he managed to regain control of the aircraft’s cockpit, allowing passengers to step in and restrain the co-pilot.
The Boeing 737, which was making a steep descent during the attack, was diverted to Tabuk in north-western Saudi Arabia where it executed an emergency landing. Machchhar, seriously injured, was subsequently taken to a hospital in Abu Dhabi for treatment. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation, and the co-pilot, an Omani national, has been detained in Saudi Arabia.
While recuperating in the hospital, Machchhar recounted the ordeal to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi via a video call. He shared how he drew strength from reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, a prayer that offered him courage during the crisis. Machchhar’s experience and quick thinking were pivotal in ensuring the safety of everyone on board.
With a career spanning over a decade with SpiceJet before joining flydubai four years ago, Machchhar brings thousands of hours of flying experience to his role. His professional expertise was undoubtedly a key factor in managing the emergency situation effectively.
The incident has raised numerous questions surrounding cockpit security and the relationship between the pilots. As investigations continue, the aviation community remains focused on understanding the circumstances that led to this alarming event.
