Budapest Summit Canceled: US, Russia Cite “No Immediate Plans”

Date:

The planned Budapest summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin appears to be canceled for now. A US official stated Tuesday there are “no plans” for a meeting in the “immediate future.”
The Kremlin’s spokesperson offered a similar statement, telling reporters there is “no precise timeframe” for a summit.
This is a sharp reversal from last week, when President Trump, after a call with Putin, announced on social media that the two would meet within two weeks.
That announcement led to a “productive” phone call on Monday between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Despite the call, the US official confirmed no presidential meeting was on the books and no further diplomatic meeting was “necessary.”
