Zelensky Says US Drives June Peace Goal with Historic Florida Summit Proposal

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that the United States is pushing to end the Russia-Ukraine war by June and has proposed Miami as the location for next week’s peace negotiations. This represents a notable advancement in American diplomatic engagement.

In remarks to reporters publicized early Saturday, Zelensky revealed that Washington’s invitation to host Ukrainian and Russian negotiating teams in Miami would be a first in the conflict’s history. The unprecedented proposal demonstrates increased US commitment to facilitating dialogue between the warring parties. According to Zelensky, American officials have expressed their intention to resolve everything by June of this year.

These forthcoming talks would represent the third round of US-mediated negotiations, building on two previous sessions in Abu Dhabi that began in January. While the Abu Dhabi meetings successfully arranged a major prisoner exchange, they failed to resolve the core territorial disagreements that perpetuate the conflict. Russia currently controls about 20 percent of Ukrainian territory and is insisting on formal authority over additional land in the strategically important Donetsk region.

Kyiv has consistently and firmly refused to accept territorial losses, arguing that sovereign boundaries must be defended regardless of military pressure. Russian negotiators have characterized their territorial requirements as essential and have warned of renewed military escalation if diplomatic talks do not yield favorable territorial outcomes. This impasse over borders continues to prevent substantive progress toward a comprehensive peace settlement.

Diplomatic initiatives proceed alongside ongoing military operations. In a Saturday video statement, Zelensky reported that Russian forces had launched attacks against infrastructure critical to Ukraine’s nuclear power plant operations during the previous night. The attacks forced multiple nuclear reactor units to reduce their power output, with one reactor shutting down automatically. Zelensky described the strikes as unprecedented terrorism and demanded that Russia prove its negotiating sincerity by ceasing attacks on vital civilian infrastructure.
