Modi, Meloni Reaffirm Strategic Partnership and Push for India-EU Trade Deal

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held a detailed conversation on strengthening bilateral ties, trade cooperation, and global stability.
In a post on social media, Modi described the talks as “excellent,” noting that both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the India-Italy Strategic Partnership. He also expressed gratitude for Italy’s proactive support in advancing the ongoing India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations and boosting connectivity through the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC).
The India-EU FTA, negotiations for which resumed in 2022 after nearly a decade, is currently in its 13th round. The agreement is expected to cover a wide range of areas including goods, services, investment, and digital trade. A successful deal would expand India’s access to European markets and enhance overall trade volumes.
Both leaders also reviewed the progress of the IMEEC, a mega-infrastructure initiative launched during the G20 Summit in New Delhi in 2023. The project aims to connect India, the Middle East, and Europe through integrated transport and energy networks, offering a strategic alternative to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
In addition, Modi and Meloni exchanged views on the conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for diplomacy and dialogue to ensure peace and stability.
