While divisive content receives algorithmic amplification under engagement-based optimization, constructive dialogue and bipartisan cooperation get systematically suppressed. Content promoting nuance, compromise, and mutual understanding typically generates less engagement than inflammatory posts, creating algorithmic incentives that bury exactly the kind of discourse democracy requires.
The research identified opposition to bipartisan consensus as one marker of divisive content. Among over 1,000 users during the 2024 presidential election, exposure to more such anti-compromise content increased polarization substantially. This suggests that algorithms amplifying content attacking bipartisan cooperation actively undermine democratic norms while suppressing posts promoting such cooperation.
This systematic burial of constructive content may prove even more harmful than amplification of divisive material. Societies need examples of productive cross-partisan dialogue to maintain hope that cooperation remains possible. When algorithms hide such examples while amplifying conflict, they distort public perceptions of what’s politically possible and normalized.
The engagement optimization logic driving this dynamic is straightforward. Controversial posts provoke strong reactions that boost metrics platforms optimize for. Nuanced posts acknowledging complexity and seeking common ground generate milder responses. Algorithms following engagement signals therefore systematically favor conflict over cooperation regardless of what serves democratic health.
Reversing these incentives would require fundamental changes to optimization objectives. Rather than maximizing engagement volume, algorithms could prioritize engagement quality, rewarding constructive dialogue even if it generates fewer total interactions. Or platforms could explicitly optimize for democratic health metrics like reduced polarization, accepting whatever engagement patterns result. Whether corporate structures can accommodate such changes voluntarily or whether external requirements will be necessary remains uncertain.
