Peak District’s Newest Path: A ‘Trail for Everyone’

Date:

The newly launched, 62-mile Steel Cotton Rail Trail is being hailed as a “trail for everyone,” thanks to its immense variety and clever, accessible design. This 14-section route between Manchester and Sheffield truly has an option for every type of walker.
The trail’s “something for everyone” philosophy is built into its 14 day-length, rail-linked sections. “Summit fiends” can choose the challenging hill and moor sections. Families with “young children or old dogs” can opt for the flat, easy canal and riverside walks.
Even city-lovers are included. The trail features “metropolitan mooches” at its urban ends, perfect for “urban explorers” who want to delve into the “Steel” and “Cotton” heritage of the two cities.
This post-industrial route is packed with interest, from the 18th-century Peak Forest Tramway to the dramatic gorges of New Mills. It’s a landscape where “work and wilderness” coexist, offering a more authentic glimpse of the countryside.
Now fully waymarked and with free maps available, this versatile new trail is open. It’s a fantastic way to “choose your challenge” and discover the varied, “eye-calming” landscapes of the Peak District.
