African Immigration Specifically Targeted in Trump’s Europe Critique

Date:

Donald Trump has specifically emphasized African immigration in his attacks on European policies, repeatedly mentioning the Congo and other African nations. The president’s focus on African migration comes as he simultaneously pressures Ukraine to accept territorial concessions to Russia.
Trump’s push for a Ukraine peace settlement includes demands that President Zelenskyy accept land transfers to Russia within an extremely short timeframe. US envoys have reportedly given Ukraine only days to respond to terms that would exchange concrete territorial losses for unclear American security commitments. Trump’s public statements about Russian military superiority have been criticized as undermining Ukraine’s negotiating position.
The president’s characterization of Europe focused heavily on African immigration, with Trump stating: “they’re coming in from the Congo, tremendous numbers of people coming from the Congo. And even worse, they’re coming from prisons of the Congo and many other countries.” His specific and repeated references to the Congo and other African nations, combined with explicitly racial framing, has been identified by analysts as promoting xenophobic narratives about African populations.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan received particularly harsh personal attacks from Trump, with the president using severe insults. Trump’s criticism of London centered on demographic shifts and Khan’s identity as the city’s first Muslim mayor. Khan responded by expressing bewilderment at Trump’s apparent obsession while defending London’s character and success.
European leaders have responded with unified rejection of Trump’s characterization. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that Europe can manage its own democratic affairs, while EU officials described the White House approach as provocative interference. Trump’s specific focus on African immigration, combined with unsubstantiated claims about criminals, has reinforced concerns about racial discrimination underlying his rhetoric. Pope Leo XIV joined political leaders in warning that Trump’s approach threatens the transatlantic alliance.
