Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen has endorsed the club’s move into administration as a “fresh restart,” stating the financial chaos of recent months “cannot continue.” The decision, made by owner Dejphon Chansiri, means the club starts on -6 points, 15 points from safety.
Pedersen, who has had to manage a depleted squad after an exodus due to unpaid wages, met with administrators on Friday. He acknowledged the “insecurity” among staff but said the “general feeling” was one of hope for “better days.”
The administration ousts Chansiri, a move fans are “overjoyed” about. The Supporters Trust blamed his “financial mismanagement” for the crisis, which includes a $pounds{}$1 million tax bill. The “bittersweet” day was marked by the swift removal of Chansiri’s name from stadium seats.
The club is now in the hands of Begbies Traynor, who are marketing the club and its stadium to new buyers. Joint-administrator Kris Wigfield said Chansiri’s decision to include the stadium company “is great news for supporters.”
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said the Owls’ plight highlights the need for the new independent football regulator. For now, the club’s survival depends on fan support, with the Supporters Trust calling for an end to boycotts and a massive turnout at Hillsborough.
