In a significant leadership transition, Sir Demis Hassabis is stepping down from his role as chief executive of Google DeepMind. This comes amid a reorganization of the AI research unit’s leadership. Hassabis, who was instrumental in founding DeepMind in 2010, will now serve as the chair of the organization. Additionally, he will assume the position of chief scientist at Alphabet, Google’s parent company. This move allows him to redirect his focus from the everyday management duties to more strategic, long-term research in artificial intelligence, particularly in developing artificial general intelligence.
Filling the leadership role at DeepMind will be the current chief technology officer, Koray Kavukcuoglu, who will step into the position of head of the organization with the title of senior vice-president. Hassabis expressed that this transition will enable him to concentrate more on the overarching advancement of advanced AI technologies, ensuring their positive impact on humanity. His responsibilities extend to maintaining his role as chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, a drug-discovery enterprise that originated from DeepMind.
The reorganization at Google DeepMind coincides with the exit of several notable senior engineers from Google’s AI team. Notably, Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat are departing to embark on a new venture named Discovery Loop, a startup aimed at pioneering research in machine learning, science, and engineering. Their departure underscores the increasingly competitive landscape of the AI industry.
Within this fiercely competitive sector, Google faces mounting challenges from emerging companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have achieved significant breakthroughs in AI model development and coding technologies. These shifts in leadership and talent within Google’s AI division reflect the company’s strategic efforts to bolster its standing in the fast-evolving race towards advanced artificial intelligence.
