PM Modi Stands Firm on Farmers’ Interests Amid Trump’s Tariff Hike on Indian Exports

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reaffirmed India’s unwavering support for its farmers in the wake of a steep increase in tariffs on Indian goods by former US President Donald Trump. Speaking at the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in Delhi, Modi declared that India will not compromise the welfare of its farmers, even at a significant economic cost.
“For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know we will have to pay a heavy price for it, and I am ready for it. India is ready for it,” Modi said.
His remarks follow Trump’s recent executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, raising the total tariff to 50%. The order cites national security and foreign policy concerns, referencing India’s continued oil trade with Russia. The new tariff will apply after a 21-day period, excluding goods already in transit or those granted exemptions.
Trade tensions have risen due to the US pushing for more access to India’s agricultural markets—particularly in corn, soybeans, and cotton. However, India has consistently resisted these demands, citing the protection of domestic farmers and rural livelihoods as paramount.
